Chapter
Nineteen
I woke up a minute before my alarm.
The day was already off to a good start. Being able to catch the alarm right before it went off was a small pleasure of mine. Part of me, however, wondered if Iâd been sleeping light.
Was that from nerves, or anticipation?
I was worried about Antrum. We were still working on the dome-shaped cavern. Weâd mined so much from it that the walls had expanded. Weâd even set up several wooden pillars and lattices to increase the stability of the walls. Thereâd been enough money from our finds that we could afford to hire some carpenters to help.
As much as weâd gained, I felt nervous in that cavern. The feeling didnât happen often, only when I thought about what lay beyond it. The tunnel entrance, for example, freaked me out. I had no shame or fear in admitting it. It was too clean, its edges too defined.
Weâd investigated it once. It twisted back and forth for a short way, then cut suddenly left and downward. From there, it became a sloping hallway, its ceiling, walls, and floor flattened. There were only a few of the bumps and ridges weâd come to expect underground. The area had been flattened by someoneâor something. It was large, too, about eight feet square, and incredibly long. Eo had cast her orb of light and sent it as far down as it would go. We saw no sign of an end to the tunnel.
How long, I often wondered since, had that lion been running before it arrived at us? Had it really heard our commotion? Had it come by coincidence? What had sent it down there to begin with?
The three of us had agreed to block it off. We used simple wooden boards and yellow caution tape. It would stop nothing, but we would know if something had come through while we were away. So far, nothing had.
No, Jack. Donât worry about it.
Worries only brought tension. Tension made yoga difficult, which in turn, made Tabby laugh at my tenseness.
Maybe, I hoped, thatâs why itâs easy to wake up early on the weekend.
Tabby and I kept up our daily routine on our days off. Normally, we started an hour later on our weekends. The previous day, though, she had requested to start at the same time today. I wasnât sure why.
The house was especially quiet as I rose and moved downstairs. Sunny indulged in her liquid vice on Saturday nights. Considering how well she did through the rest of the week, none of us stopped her. Sheâd likely be out of commission until noon. Eo was on the opposite end of the spectrum, habit wise. On Saturday nights, she holed up in her room and busied herself with models well into the night.
I stepped outside, the cool air helping me wake up. The bigger help in that regard, however, was already on her mat. Tabby was in something Iâd learned was called the dolphin pose. Her feet and forearms rested on the mat, spine slanted down with her head so near the mat that her hair almost touched it.
